What is a Ryokan? An Onsen?

First let’s break down what I’m talking about here when I say “ryokan with private onsen in Hakone”:

Hakone – A scenic Japanese town located south of Tokyo, famous for its hot springs and views of Lake Ashinoko and Mt. Fuji. Hakone makes a perfect day-trip from Tokyo but many travelers choose to spend the night here to stay in a Ryokan. For maximum relaxation, treat-yo-self to two days in this quaint Japanese town.

Ryokan – A traditional Japanese inn known for incredible hospitality, where guests can wear yukata (Japanese-style bathrobes), enjoy an onsen, and usually with Japanese dinner and breakfast included. Traditionally guests sleep on futons on tatami floors, but most modern ryokans offer rooms with Western-style beds as well.

Onsen – Japanese hot springs which can be indoor or outdoor, public or private, and usually enjoyed in the nude (hence the preference for a private onsen!)
