As a vegetarian living in Japan, I can fully understand the struggle of finding ryokan that cater to dietary restrictions. Because I don’t want to miss out on traditional Japanese experiences like staying and eating at a ryokan, I’ve researched these Japanese ryokan with vegetarian options!
Staying in a traditional onsen ryokan is the perfect way to experience Japanese culture and find relaxation during your time in Japan. Ryokan typically serve kaiseki, or multi-course meals using seasonal and regional ingredients. In Japan, this almost always means fish or meat are on the menu. If you’re a vegan or vegetarian in Japan, don’t worry! I’ve compiled this list of ryokan which will cater to vegetarian, sometimes vegan, dietary restrictions as long as you request a special meal ahead of time. And here’s a plus – they have onsen and private onsen options on-site as well!
Remember to request the vegan or vegetarian meal option when you book your Japanese ryokan, so they can prepare ingredients in advance of your stay.
One thing to note is that some of the locations on this list of Japanese ryokan with vegetarian options are called, “Hotels”. Even if they have “hotel” in their name, they still provide the traditional Japanese onsen ryokan experience. That is, onsen public bathing spaces, yukata rentals, kaiseki dinners and breakfasts, Japanese tatami room options, and the omotenashi hospitality that you’d expect from classic Japanese ryokans.
Because this list of Japanese ryokan with vegetarian meal options covers many areas of Japan, I’ve grouped them together by some of the more famous onsen regions: Hakone, Nikko, Kawaguchiko, etc. Let’s start with the first, Hakone.
Disclaimer: This post is accurate at the time of writing. Please double-check with each ryokan and hotel whether vegan and vegetarian meal options are, in fact, available at the time of your own booking.
