1. Furuya Ryokan Atami
Furuya Ryokan Atami is a historic ryokan, the oldest in Atami, which as been operating since 1806. The ryokan showcases bits and pieces of its long history, including a collection of woodblock prints and the oldest radio in Japan, in a museum-style lobby.
Rooms here are Japanese-style with tatami mats and futon beds, and some come with a private open-air onsen which are fed by Atami Onsen waters. Both indoor and outdoor public onsen baths are also available to guests.
Guests can enjoy kaiseki, multi-course meals which are brought directly to your room. Al la carte items like sashimi boats can be added to meals as well.

2. Watei Kazekomichi
Watei Kazekomichi or WA亭 風こみち in Japanese is a great example of a beautiful traditional ryokan in Atami. This top-rated, boutique Japanese ryokan only has eight rooms, which means all guests can expect a private and personalized experience.

3. Atami Onsen Sakuraya Ryokan
Atami Onsen Sakuraya Ryokan was founded in 1949 and prides itself on providing the best omotenashi, or Japanese hospitality experience to their guests.

Most rooms are Japanese-style with tatami flooring and futon beds, however some rooms come with Western-style beds with tatami living areas. 4. Shin Kadoya Atami
Shin Kadoya is a Japanese onsen ryokan in Atami that offers a unique experiences like an outdoor rooftop onsen, and a suite room with a private pool.
Rooms here are Japanese-style with tatami flooring, and some rooms come with wrap-around ocean views from the terrace. Select rooms also have private onsen attached, with the onsen tub made of Shigaraki pottery. The suite room is the most impressive room of all, with a private pool in a private yard, as well as private hot spring onsen. It fits up to 8 guests, making it a great Atami ryokan for big groups and big families. Kaiseki meals are served in-room, and many local sakes including the ryokan’s own brew can be added to the meal.

5. Atami Onsen Yamaki Ryokan
Atami Onsen Yamki Ryokan is a renovated historical Japanese ryokan located in downtown Atami city. Although it has been operating for over 90 years, this ryokan’s recently updated rooms ensure modern comforts are available to guests here. Most of the rooms are Japanese-style rooms, however limited Western-style rooms are also available.
This onsen ryokan has public indoor onsen separated by gender, as well as a smaller private kashikiri, or reservable, indoor onsen. Kaiseki meals made with local ingredients are served in-room or in a banquet hall on-site.

Part 3: Retro Ryokan in Atami
An experience that is uniquely Atami is the presence of many retro ryokan. These old buildings, often in mega-hotels, offer a glimpse into life during Japan’s economic boom years of the 1980’s.
These ryokan were built in their grandeur during the height of Japan’s bubble economy, when Tokyo-ites could afford frequent and lavish getaways to Atami. Retro ryokan elements include bold architecture, unique design features, and vintage furnishings… and usually funky carpet colors too!

11. Hotel New AKAO Atami
Hotel New AKAO is the perfect example of a retro Atami hot spring resort hotel. This unique hotel will transport anyone who walks through their doors straight to Japan’s nostalgic Showa era. Highlights of its funky 80’s interior include a gaming room, banquet halls with chandeliers, karaoke bar, and two on-site gift shops selling official Hotel New AKAO merchandise as well as souvenirs unique to Atami.
The hotel is located on its own peninsula, and has sweeping ocean views from its hot springs, guest rooms, and rooftop garden space. One of its outdoor hot springs even has an infinity pool!

12. Hatoya Hotel
Hatoya Hotel is another popular retro Atami hotel that peaked during the Japan bubble era. Known for its tunnel walkway, red carpets, and other Showa-era interior design this hotel in Atami should be on every history buff’s bucket list.
Highlights of this hotel include its spacious interior hallways, the bar and snack areas, indoor pool, onsen hot springs, and of course – game room, karaoke room, and even a ping pong table. The souvenir shop on-site also sells Hatoya and Atami souvenirs.
The rooms here are simple Western-style rooms or Japanese tatami rooms, with traditional furniture and decor. Meals are served buffet-style in the dining hall or in private rooms available for reservation.
Hatoya Hotel also has a sister hotel also in Atami, located along the Shizuoka coastline: the Hatoya Sun Hotel. It’s another retro Atami gem but doesn’t have the circle-window tunnel walkway – Don’t get the two confused when making your booking!

13. Atami Korakuen Hotel
Atami Korakuen Hotel, or Atami Bay Resort Korakuen, is one of the largest onsen hotels in Atami. It offers services like a spa, hot springs, souvenir shopping, pools, lounges, and a bar. You’re able to enjoy the riches of Atami without even leaving the hotel! Its location on the coastline of the Izu Peninsula also gives it a great view overlooking the heart of Atami city and the bay surrounding it.
Rooms here are Western style or Japanese style, with many rooms boasting ocean views. Buffet-style meals as well as Japanese kaiseki multi-course meals are available at this hotel.

14. Atami New Fujiya Hotel
Atami New Fujiya Hotel is a retro Atami hot springs resort located just a 4-minute walk from Atami Sun Beach in the heart of the city.
This historic building has been a part of the Atami skyline since 1964, the year of the first Tokyo Olympics, and before the Tokaido Shinkansen was built. The hotel annex was also built in 1986. The hotel has retained its decades-old charm in its historic and retro rooms, including karaoke rooms, game rooms, souvenir shops, and bars. Its unique features include a manga reading room and a spacious massage-chair room.
Atami New Fujiya has three hot springs available for their guests, including a spacious outdoor rooftop onsen. Meals here are served buffet-style in their dining area. Alternatively, in-room kaiseki meals can also be enjoyed. Both Western and Japanese-style rooms are available.
Although the hotel is past its prime, it’s one of the cheapest Atami ryokan options, and a perfect spot for visitors open to unique overnight experiences.

15. Atami Kinjokan
Atami Kinjokan is another Atami onsen hotel that is like stepping back in time. Built in 1954 and with the most recent renovations being 1984, you’ll definitely feel time ticking backwards in this retro Atami ryokan.
Despite the aged building, you’ll find everything you need here to enjoy a classic Atami onsen ryokan experience: karaoke rooms, hot springs, a Japanese garden, souvenir shop, and game room.
Most guest rooms here are Japanese-style, however some Western rooms are also available. Meals are served buffet-style.
