Let’s start with some family-friendly hotel chains that can be found in Tokyo, but also in Osaka, Kyoto, and some even out in Fukuoka and Hokkaido.
If you find the perfect Tokyo hotel chain for your family, you can copy-paste and have the same friendly and comfortable experience in another city!
1. Mimaru Hotels
No list of Tokyo hotels for families is complete without mentioning Mimaru Hotels. Mimaru is a hotel chain that caters to traveling families with kids, as well as large groups (which could be large friend groups or multi-generation families) traveling together. With locations all over Tokyo including Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Asakusa, Ueno, and more you can pick the perfect neighborhood for you.
Mimaru Hotels are apartment-style hotels that offer Western-style rooms with multiple beds, sometimes bunk beds, and sometimes in two separate bedrooms. They can fit anywhere from four up to nine people comfortably, and come with a full kitchen, a full bath with bathtub, as well as a small living and dining area. Some rooms also have laundry facilities too.
What makes Mimaru hotels extra kid-friendly is the ability to rent toys, board games, and cooking appliances for home dinner parties. For fans of Pokemon in Tokyo, some Mimaru locations like Tokyo Ueno East and Tokyo Ginza East offer a special Pokemon-themed room! The hotel has also partnered with family-friendly tour guides, and a Fast Doctor service in case of emergencies.

- Kyoto, including near Kyoto Station and the Kyoto Kawaramachi shopping district (both offer Pokemon rooms).

2. illi Hotels
illi Hotels are an up-and-coming family-friendly hotel chain in Tokyo that also caters to large groups and families. Their (literally) edgy and industrial interior design isn’t exactly toddler-friendly, but it’s a great place to stay for families with older kids or large groups between four to eight people. Their apart-hotel rooms are themed to feel like a slumber party at home, not a hotel.
With locations in trendy neighborhoods, illi Hotels are one of few options where you can book spacious rooms in close proximity to Tokyo tourist hubs. These illi locations all accommodate between 4-6 people and include a living and dining area and kitchenette:
One of the largest illi hotel locations is illi Esu Nakano accommodates EIGHT people. It’s located in the family-friendly Nakano district in West Tokyo. This spacious apartment comes with a full kitchen, a washer-dryer, and plenty of living spaces to chill out with your family and friends.
The downside of these hotels is that they are more like Airbnb’s, so do not offer services like luggage storage, nor do they have any concierge at the properties.
3. Stay Sakura Hotels
Stay Sakura Hotels are perfect Tokyo hotels for families and large groups. Another chain, Sakura Hotels run accommodation of varying types, qualities, and room sizes so it’s best to research ahead of time. I’ve listed here which I think are some of the best Sakura Hotels for families in Tokyo.
- Stay SAKURA Tokyo Asakusa Yokozuna Hotel is on my list of Tokyo Hotels with Private Onsen. They have a special three-bedroom suite room which comes with a private onsen-style tub! Not to mention its beautiful Japanese-style interior and furnishings.
- Stay SAKURA Tokyo Shinjuku Hyakukura offers two adjoined rooms, each with bunk beds, to fit up to four people (compactly). Other single rooms can also fit two adults and two children with shared beds.
- Stay SAKURA Tokyo Asakusa Art Deco Hotel is a perfect Tokyo hotel for families looking for a unique stay. This hotel offers a two-bedroom family suite that can hold up to six people.
Sakura Hotels also have locations in Kyoto, including self-contained studio apartments in the Gion district, and a two-bedroom townhouse, or also known as a traditional Kyoto machiya which fits up to five guests.
Stay Sakura Hotels do have a front desk and offer luggage storage and have communal laundry facilities.
4. Henn Na Hotels
Henn na Hotels are located around Tokyo as well as in many large cities across Japan. They are undoubtedly some of the weirdest hotels in Japan and can be a very entertaining stay for kids and families. In fact, the name “Henn-na Hotel” literally translates to “Weird Hotel” in Japanese!
This hotel is known around the world for having robot staff greet guests at the front desk upon arrival. Human-like robots and even large dinosaur robots work at the check-in kiosks, and it doesn’t stop there. Other robots like ones that carry your luggage, and mini robots to take your breakfast order, are available in some of the Henna na hotels. Don’t worry, human receptionists can also be called if the robots are not cooperating.

Unfortunately, Henn Na Hotel rooms are often limited to 2-3 people, so larger families will need to book multiple rooms for their stay.

5. STAY ARI Apartment Hotels
STAY ARI apart-hotels provide spacious accommodation in the heart of Tokyo. Most of their locations are around the Shinjuku neighborhood, known for its towering skyscrapers, vibrant nightlife, and shopping and entertainment districts. Not to mention being home to the world’s busiest train station! STAY ARI locations come in various sizes, including the following:
- STAY ARI Shinjuku-Takadanobaba: Up to 6 people can stay in these spacious and modern studio apartments, which come with a balcony. A baby cot is also available upon request.
- STAY ARI Shinjuku Gyoen: 4-5 people can stay at these studio apartments with kitchenette and dining areas included.
- STAY ARI Higashi-shinjuku: This two-bedroom house has a spacious living area that can convert to a third bedroom to fit up to nine people. A baby cot is also available upon request.
- STAY ARI Shin-Okubo: Close to Tokyo’s Korea town, this three-bedroom house fits up to 12 people.
Once again, these are more Airbnb-style apartment hotels, so may not be suitable for those seeking hotel amenities like a 24-hour concierge and luggage transfer services.
With the self-contained kitchens, laundry, and other apartment facilities though, these are perfect places to stay in Tokyo with large groups or multiple families.
6. Karaksa Hotels
Karaksa Hotels offer a massive perk for traveling families and large groups of travelers to Tokyo: connecting rooms! Karaksa Hotels make it super easy to book connecting rooms, which can accommodate up to six adults in most of their hotels.
Karaksa hotels also go out of their way to make it easier for families to travel together. They even have a separate website where they highlight different family accommodation plans and baby and young child amenities.
Amenities include baby items like diapers and baby wipes, free toys and toy rentals, and child-friendly equipment like step stools, bed guards, and baby baths.

Hoshino Resorts is a highly acclaimed hotel chain in Japan, renowned for its exceptional service and high-quality hospitality. OMO5 is a more budget-friendly hotel chain owned by Hoshino Resorts, which provides basic yet comfortable accommodation options for families in Tokyo.
The best OMO5 hotel in Tokyo for families is the OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka (located near the trendy Ikebukuro neighborhood). The family rooms here fit four people have a spacious bunk bed layout, making for a unique and adventurous stay.
OMO5 Tokyo Gotanda in south Tokyo and OMO3 Asakusa also offer four-person rooms but without the bunk beds. Be sure to check the room sizes when booking this family-friendly hotel in Tokyo. For the low price, you’ll be getting Japanese-sized rooms!

8. Cha-An Hotel Ueno
Cha-an Hotel in Ueno is another family and kid-friendly hotel in Tokyo that can accommodate large groups in a single room. Kaika Tokyo is a great Tokyo hotel for families with a little older kids. The modern industrial interior and it’s second purpose as an art storage space for local artists makes it a unique place to stay in Tokyo.
Kaika Tokyo offers four-person Japanese-style family rooms, four-person bunk bed rooms, and even six-person bunk bed rooms. Plenty of fun and an adventurous experience for the whole family! Breakfast is served at a restaurant on-site, and cafe food is available during the day as well.
The location of this hotel in a residential area in East Tokyo makes it a super safe and quiet place to stay. It’s also close to Tokyo Skytree and the Sumida River.

10. Keio Plaza Hotel
The Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku opened in 1971 and holds the distinction of being the first Tokyo skyscraper hotel. This hotel is one of few 5-star hotels in Tokyo which offers rooms that accommodate up to four or five people, making it a great place to stay for families and larger groups.
The Keio Plaza Hotel also offers an impressive 22 restaurants and bars, including 7 Japanese restaurants, a salon, lounge space, outdoor pool, spa, and in-room massage. There is also a JTB travel center within it, so you can join one of 50 different bus tours around Tokyo and surrounding areas which depart right from the hotel lobby. 11. The Imperial Hotel
The Imperial Hotel is a luxurious Tokyo hotel located near the Imperial Palace in Tokyo’s east. The Imperial Hotel is a prestigious hotel has been operating as a high-end hotel in Tokyo since 1890.
Although this hotel doesn’t offer family-sized rooms (the maximum capacity is three people), it’s a great hotel for 3-person families, and especially for young couples with a baby because of the daycare available on-site.
The Imperial Hotel also has a number of restaurants including French, Japanese, and causal diner food. Several of the restaurants on-site have private rooms available for booking, for a quiet and discreet experience. Hotel facilities include an indoor pool, sauna, fitness center, spa, and a music room with a Steinway grand piano.
The Imperial Hotel sits opposite from Hibiya Park, a large green space which holds a number of events and festivals during the year.

12. Traditional Ryokan Stays - A Hotel Alternative
When looking for accommodation for families, consider staying at a traditional ryokan in Tokyo. At ryokans, guests usually stay in Japanese-style tatami rooms and sleep on futon beds. It’s a great way to kids to experience traditional Japanese living, and because the futons are on the floor, there’s no concern about them falling off the bed!
One example is Ryokan Kamogawa Asakusa, which features a rooftop onsen that’s available to reserve for private use. If you’re seeking a family-friendly onsen experience, this private onsen is a great way to experience what is traditionally a gender-segregated experience. The ryokan also has yukata rentals and free toiletries available for guests, and Japanese toys and calligraphy experiences in the lobby.
Another option is Prostyle Ryokan Tokyo Asakusa, a modern ryokan in Tokyo, which offers the full kaiseki-style dinner experience as well as large breakfasts for guests. Both Japanese-style and Western-style rooms are available here, with tatami flooring and attached baths.
Both of these ryokans are located steps away from Asakusa’s famous Nakamise shopping street and Sensoji Temple, one of the best areas to stay in Tokyo for families.
